Tourist Guide to Cadiz – Spain

Cadiz is a beautiful city located at the Peninsula in the center of the bay. Because of its location and the shape of the coast line, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean appear silvery and that is why Cadiz is given the name “The Silver Cup.” The city of Cadiz is very cheerful and friendly and you will find a number of colorful and historical points of interest while walking along the promenade. The residents of this city are known to be very friendly and have the best sense of humor in Spain! Cadiz is also famous in Spain on account of its colorful festivals and carnival celebrations.

Cadiz has a unique location as it is situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and this is the reason for the multi-cultural historical background of this beautiful city. Established by the ancient Phoenicians, the previous name of the city was Gadir and at that time this city was considered to be an important location for the Phoenicians but later on, it was occupied by Carthaginians. Roman occupied the city from the days of Hannibal and the city was named Gades during their rule. During the rule of the Roman Empire, many historical and important buildings were constructed including aqueducts and amphitheaters and many other monuments.

Cadiz Museum

This museum is located in Plaza de la Mina and has three sections consisting of art, archeology and ethnography. You will also find some important remains of the Roman and Phoenician times on the ground floor of the museum.

Roman Theater

This is the biggest Roman structure in the Spain and it has its links with the first century. Although the complete structure does not exist today, you can still see some remains of this theater.

Roman Aqueducts

These water pipes were installed to supply water to the city of Cadiz from Tempul, located at a distance of 70 kilometers from the city. The remains of these aqueducts are still present in the luxury villas spain.

Roman Factory

You can also find the remains of the ancient structure of the Roman factory used to produce salt fish and this proves that the city experienced economic growth during those days. There are number of other monuments and buildings located in the center of the city and you can visit many places, churches and also some of the military and civilian buildings of ancient times in Cadiz.
