The Very Best of Stockholm
There is much to see in Stockholm, Sweden’s bustling capital. The city itself, known for its clean streets, beautiful parks and friendly people, is a must if you want go get the feel of a true Scandinavian city. The city, built on 14 islands, has gorgeous waterways nearly everywhere you look, causing many to refer to it as the “Venice of Scandinavia”. There are many attractions that you might want to add to your list, here are just a few to get you started.
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s old town and, with a great number of attractions, a must-see part of Sweden. Founded in 1252, this medieval town centre has a host of well-preserved buildings, restaurants and places to shop. You’ll enjoy walking through the windy, cobblestone streets, looking up at the gorgeous, gold-tinted buildings from hundreds of years ago. You may want to stop by Sweden’s national cathedral, Stockholm Cathedral, while in Gamla Stan, and, if the weather’s nice, you could bring a lunch to the six-mile long Royal National City Park.
The Royal Palace, home of the King of Sweden, is perhaps the best attraction in the Gamla Stan. With over 600 exquisite rooms, this is a favourite tourist spot for many. If you’re a fan of royalty, gorgeous architecture and beautiful historical pieces, you’ll definitely want to add the Royal Palace to your list of things to do in Stockholm. There are five museums to see within the palace, as well as royal costumes and armour. You can also see the daily changing of the guards at the palace, most of which was built in the 18th century.
If you want a great view of the city, head to Skansen. Located on the island Djurgården, Skansen has the oldest open-air museum in the world as well as the zoo, making this the perfect attraction for the whole family. Check online once you know when you’ll be there, as there are many concerts and special events that take place at Skansen, including folk dancing and annual holiday celebrations.
As with any trip, you may want to plan ahead. Stockholm gets busy especially in the summer, so book your flights and accommodation as soon as you know your travel dates. You may want to stay at a city centre hotel, like the hotel Stockholm, so you’ll have easy access to many of the city’s attractions. Wherever you choose to stay, you’ll no doubt enjoy this Scandinavian city, with its friendly people and historic sights.
