For those interested in beautiful furniture the Danish design is very attractive. Functionality mixed with innovative and beautiful design has made this kind of furniture sought after by many people the world over. Even though it really only sprang into being after the Second World War, the freedom of expression that was encouraged in the country and the many fine architects that came from such a small country saw to it that Danish furniture has become renowned for its beauty.

Beautiful design is not limited to furniture though, but is also applied to such household items as lamps and silverware. However, furniture such as tables and chairs of all kinds has certainly benefitted from the input of many Danish architects, and many designs have become classics. These chair designs cannot really be considered old as many were designed only in the 1950s.

Simple and elegant, these designs very often incorporated ergonomic principles that meant the chairs were designed to fit the human form and so were incredibly comfortable; no doubt one reason why they become so popular. At the time, much of the furniture that was being made was designed for looks rather than comfort. People were no doubt supposed to spend all their days working rather than sitting on a comfortable seat. Comfort was kept for those who were rich enough that they didn’t have to work.

However, things changed after the war and it was seen that everyone should be comfortable as much as possible, even while they were working, but especially while relaxing. Danish furniture allowed this and that is one reason for its popularity. That such furniture was also beautiful, strong and looked attractive no doubt also contributed to its favour with the general public.

Many architects of Scandinavian design were second of even third generation architects and this is also whey their designs were so good. Kaare Klint who studied with his architect father and built churches was one of the main initiators of the modern Scandinavian style of furniture. Borge Mogenson who studied with Klint expanded on many of Klint’s innovative ideas and his designs created a worldwide demand for this kind of furniture. They are still popular even today.

Hans Wegner worked on the principle that every side of a chair should be equally beautiful, rather than going along with most furniture designers who paid little attention to the backs of seats. He considered that all designs should be constantly evolving into something even more beautiful and functional. Designers such as these have really turned furniture design on its head and ensured that everyone is able to be seated in comfort.
