Regularly review your household suppliers and save money
An important part of managing your household bills is keeping on top of your contracted suppliers. This includes services such as your gas and electricity, your home phone, mobile and Internet, as well as your insurance and financial providers. Many people simply allow these contracts to renew each year, without shopping around for an alternative deal. However, habitually reviewing your service providers before the contract is due for renewal can instantly save you loads.
Utilities provider
Gas and electricity are a household’s biggest running cost, so this is a good place to start to save money. Within 120 days before your existing contract is up for renewal, your energy supplier is legally obliged to inform you and send on a renewal pack with full terms and conditions. On top of this, it is now easier than ever before to switch suppliers, which is great news for consumers.
If you have moved into a new place and ‘inherited’ the energy suppliers the previous occupants used, then chances are it may not be the best deal for you and your needs. Also, if you are a renting, then it’s perfectly acceptable to approach your landlord if you find a better deal with an alternate energy supplier.
Often, if you get your electricity and gas from the same suppliers, you qualify for a dual-fuel discount. This could also mean you are paying standard rates for both. This is why it’s important to shop around for the best energy deal for you, whether it is with one single supplier or separate.
Phone and Internet provider
These days, there is a wide range of mobile, home phone and Internet plans that can be catered to your specific needs. Monitor your phone and Internet usage, including heavy usage times, numbers you call regularly and the destinations you call regularly i.e. overseas or national. Based on these needs, shop around to make sure you are on or can switch to the best deal possible.
If your circumstances change, such as the kids leaving home, your phone and Internet usage needs may change. For this reason, before your contracts are due for renewal, again take a look at your phone and broadband usage and shop around in case a cheaper, more suitable deal is now available.
Other suppliers
Insurance providers and banking institutions are two other common services that you pay for regularly, so again, it’s important to monitor exactly what you are being charged. Ensure you know exactly what fees and interest you are paying and use this information to search for a better deal.
The providers of your household services, such as utilities and phone and Internet, want your custom and shopping around, knowing what is available and being serious about switching can not only mean better rates, it can mean savings incentives from your existing suppliers and potential suppliers. Don’t get caught in the loyalty trap. Habitually review all your household contracts and save.
